at the drop of a hat

「帽子を落として」

19世紀のアメリカでは競走のスタートの合図に、帽子を落としたり、振り下ろしたりしていましたが、これにすばやく反応する様子から、「ただちに、待ってましたとばかりに」という意味で使われます。

People will file lawsuits at the drop of a hat these days.

throw in the towel/sponge

「タオルを投げ入れる」

ボクシングの試合で、敗北の承認として、ボクサーが使用していたタオル（かつてはスポンジ）をリング内に投げ入れることから、一般的に「負けを認める、降参する」ことを表わします。

Three of the original five candidates have now thrown in the towel.

throw/toss one's hat in/into the ring

「リングに帽子を投げ入れる」

19世紀初期のアメリカで、種々の催し物の際にボクシングの試合が行われ、それに飛び入り参加を希望する者は自分の帽子をリング内に投げ入れたことから、「競争に参加を告げる」こと、特に「立候補する」ことを表わします。

She's seriously considering throwing her hat into the ring and declaring herself a candidate for the election.

be on the ball

「ボールをしっかり見ている」

球技をしている人が、いつボールが飛んできてもいいようにしっかり見ていることから、to be quick to understand and react to thingsという意味です。

If you're going to take up a job in the money market you'll really have to be on the ball.

play ball

「球技をする」

もちろん野球の試合を始めることですが、野球に限らず球技をするにはたがいの協力が必要であることから、「協力する」という意味で使われます。

Fourteen out of the fifteen nations have agreed to the new restrictions but one country still refuses to play ball.

ground rules

「グラウンドルール」とは、各球場の事情によって決められた特別の規則のことで、これが比喩的に「基本原則、行動原理」という意味でも使われます。
