prefer

verb + to do / verb + doing

I prefer to live / living in the country.
（私は田舎暮らしのほうが好きだ）

* 次の2つの動詞型に注意。

I prefer playing soccer to watching it.
＝ I prefer to play soccer rather than (to) watch it.
（サッカーは見るよりもするほうが好きです）

pretend

verb + doing

The passengers on the train pretended not to see the drunk sprawling on the seat.
（電車の乗客たちは座席に寝そべっている酔っ払いを見て見ないふりをした）

prevent

verb + object + preposition + doing

Bad weather prevented us from going mountain climbing.
（悪天候のせいで山登りができなかった）

promise

verb + to do
We promised to meet again in New York one year later.
（私たちは1年後にニューヨークで再会する約束をした）

recommend

verb + doing

I recommend your avoiding fatty food.
（脂肪の多い食べ物は避けたほうがいいですよ）

* 例文中のyourは動名詞avoidingの意味上の主語。

verb + object + to do

He recommended me to visit Bali.
（彼は私にバリ島に行ってごらんなさいと勧めた）

refuse

verb + to do

He refused to understand me.
（彼はいくら説明しても私の言うことを理解しなかった）
