文字通りには「競馬の騎手がうまく割り込んで、有利な位置につける」ことですが、比喩的に「有利な地位(位置)を得ようと策を弄する」という意味で用いられます。

jump on the bandwagon

「楽隊車に飛び乗る」とは「時流に乗る」「便乗する」ことです。

かつて、楽隊が荷馬車に乗って演奏しながら街道を行き、来るべき行事や政治集会などを宣伝するのが、アメリカ南部で日常的な光景だったことからきています。

選挙期間になると、人々は荷馬車に飛び乗り、候補者の支持を表明したそうです。

「医者が命じたとおりのもの」とは「まさに必要なもの」「ちょうどほしいと思っていたもの」を指します。

これは医師が出す処方箋や、勧める治療法などを踏まえた表現です。

the final/last straw

「最後のわら」とは「今まで耐えてきた重荷や困難などを耐え切れなくしてしまう、最後の(小さな)原因」のことです。

It is the last straw that breaks the camel's back.(ラクダの背骨を折るのは最後に乗せた1本のわらである;たとえわずかでも度を過ごせば大事にいたる)ということわざからきています。

laugh on the other side of one's face

「顔の反対側で笑う」とは「笑顔から急に泣き顔になる」ことで、幸福や成功、勝利などを味わったあとで、がっかりしたり、みじめになったり、落ち込んだりすることを指して用います。

She's pleased with her promotion but she'll be laughing on the other side of her face when she sees the extra work.

laugh up/in one's sleeve

もとはlaugh in one's sleeveという形で、「袖の中で笑う」とは、昔流行した幅広の袖で顔を覆えば笑いを隠せたことから、「こっそり腹の中で笑う」ことを表わします。
