yellow journalism

「イエロージャーナリズム」とは「扇情的で低俗なジャーナリズム」のことです。

英英辞典では次のように説明されています。

writing in newspapers that tries to get people's attention or influence their opinion by using strong language or false information

この表現の起源については、1895年にNew York Worldという新聞が最初のカラー漫画"The Yellow Kid"を掲載した際に、実験の結果、最も読者の注意を引きつける色として黄色を採用し、登場人物の子供に黄色い洋服を着せました。

このことから、人目を引くセンセーショナルなニュースを扱うyellow pressやyellow journalismということばが生まれたそうです。

The paper is practicing yellow journalism at its worst with its scandalous stories about the Governor and his family.

whiter than white

「白より白い」

洗浄力を誇る洗剤の宣伝文句に由来する表現で、比喩的にnever doing anything wrongという意味です。

I was never convinced by the image of the whiter than white princess depicted in the press.

black sheep

「黒い羊」

There's a black sheep in every flock.（どの群れにも黒羊の1頭はいるものだ＝どこの家にも困り者はいるものだ）ということわざに由来する表現で、「家族や集団の厄介者」を指します。

My father was the black sheep - he ran away at 16 to become an actor and his parents never forgave him.

black and white

「黒と白」

日本語と同じような発想から、「白黒（善悪）のはっきりした」「白か黒か（善か悪か）と単純に割り切った」という意味です。

The issue of nuclear weapons isn't as black and white as it used to be.

There's still a tendency to see the issues in black and white.

また、in black and whiteはwritten down, and therefore definiteという意味でも使われます。

I wouldn't have believed him capable of fraud, but there it was, in black and white.
