末尾の前置詞(2)

前置詞が節の後方、または末尾に残る例の続きです。

「ぼくが誇りを持てる唯一の実績」
the one and only accomplishment I ever take pride in

「彼には永遠に届かない別世界」
another world he could never again take hold of

「自分で努力し、築き上げなければならないもの」
something you must put effort into and build up yourself

「彼女たちが笑いながら走った浜」
the beach that she and her friends raced along, shrieking with laughter

日本語の語句の構造が英訳の際に大きく変わる場合の一つが、日本語では外見的にはそれ以上分解できないように見える名詞句に、英語では複数の語からなる節が対応し、さらに分離した前置詞が使われる場合です。

日本人の立場からすると、日本語なら1語で簡単に表わせるものを、わざわざ複数の簡単な単語を使って説明的に表現するという操作が必要になります。

「幼なじみ（の男の子）」
the boy I grew up with

「自分のいいところ」
something he is good at

「彼女の嫁ぎ先」
the address of the family that she married into

「話し相手」
someone to talk to

「遊び相手」
someone to have fun with

「用事」
some business to attend to

「形見」
something to remember him by

「耳掻き」
something to clean your ears with
