ここからは「スポーツ」に由来する表現を取り上げていきます。

right off the bat

「バットから即」

野球でバットに当たったボールが矢のように飛び出すイメージから、immediatelyという意味です。

You can't expect to be accepted in a new town right off the bat.

get to first base

「1塁に達する」

野球のバッターが一塁に出塁することから、「目標の第一段階に成功する」ことを表わします。

We need financing for the project, but we can't get to the first base with the banks.

below the belt

「ベルトより下」

ボクシングの試合で相手のベルトより下を打つことは反則として禁じられていることから、unfair and cruelという意味で使われます。

It was below the belt to mention his brother's criminal record.

In the run-up to the election, politicians won't hesitate to aim below the belt.

jump the gun

「ピストルの合図より前に飛び出す」。

文字通りには「フライングをする」ことですが、比喩的に「早まったことをする」ことを表わします。

They've only just met - isn't it jumping the gun to be talking about marriage already?

par for the course

「ゴルフコースの基準打数」

parとはゴルフをする人にはおなじみの言葉ですが、各ホールを回る際の基準打数のことです。

比喩的に「当然予想されること、よくあること」という意味で使われます。

たいていはよくないことを指します。

The school budget is going to be cut again this year, but then that's par for the course.

from scratch

「スタートラインから」。scratchはもともと「引っかき傷」のことですが、ここでは競技で地面に引いた「スタートライン」を指します。

ここからfrom scratchは「ゼロから、まったくの始めから」という意味です。

We lost all our work in the fire and had to start from scratch.
