elbow grease

「肘の油」

比喩的に、肉体的に力の要ることについて使います。

The polish needs a certain amount of grease elbow to apply.

make a clean breast of something

「汚れなき胸にする」

胸（＝心臓）は人間の最も奥深い感情の居場所と考えられていたことから、「すっかり白状する、洗いざらい打ち明ける」という意味で使われます。

She finally made a clean breast of it and admitted that she had stolen the money.

get something off one's chest

「胸から下ろす」

胸（＝心）から重荷を下ろすという発想から、「悩みなどを人に打ち明けてスッキリする（胸のつかえを下ろす）」ことを表わします。

I had spent two months worrying about it and I was glad to get it off my chest.

not have a leg to stand on

「拠って立つべき足が一本もない」

読んで字のごとく、支えが何もない状態から、「正当な根拠がない」という意味で、自分の行動などに対し、まともな弁護や言い訳のしようがないことを表わします。

If you haven't got a witness, you haven't got a leg to stand on.

on one's last legs

「最後の足で立っている」

比喩的に、人が「死にかかっている」あるいは「疲れ果てている」状態や、物事が「つぶれかかっている、だめになりかかっている」状態を表わします。

It looks as if her grandfather's on his last legs now.

I'd just done fifteen miles and I was on my last legs.

We've had the same vacuum cleaner for twenty years now and it's on its last legs.

pull somebody's leg

「人の足を引っぱる」

人の足を棒などに引っかけてつまずかせるいたずらから、「冗談で人をだます、かつぐ」という意味で使われます。

日本語の比喩的な意味での「人の足を引っぱる」とは意味が異なります。

I haven't won, have I? You're pulling my leg.

give somebody a leg up

leg upとは「馬などに乗ったり、障害物を越えたりするときに、脚を持って人を上げてやること」を指します。

そこから比喩的に、to help somebody to improve their situationという意味です。

It must give you a leg up if you want to be an actor and your parents are both in the profession.
