長いセンテンスを書く(1)
日本語の文は、文が長くなるほど理解が著しく困難になりますが、英語ではそれほどの障害にはなりません。
英語の文はすべて一様に長いのかというと、そんなことはありません。
長短の組み合わせです。
それでも1文あたりを平均すると日本語の文のおよそ1.5倍の長さになるそうです。
ある程度の長さをもったセンテンスは内容もまた短い場合よりも豊かに圧縮されて入っています。
このような長さと内容をもった、熟達した大人の英語を書く練習が必要です。
文と文を結合して1文に圧縮する練習をしてみましょう。
Their
purpose was not realized.
Their purpose was to pass the test.
→Their purpose
to pass the test was not realized.（不定詞を使って結合）
I
was having awfully terrible problems with my teacher.
Therefore, it was difficult
for me to speak to him for several days.
→I was having such terrible problems
with my teacher that it was difficult for me to speak to him for several days.（such
… that）
比較的短い日本語の文に慣れ親しんでいる日本人にとって、このような熟達を感じさせる長さをもった英文を感覚的に会得することは大切ですから、音読してみてください。
すぐれた大人の文といわれるものは、2文ではなく3文以上が付加あるいは埋め込まれている場合が多いようです。
George
Steven could not tell red from green.
George Steven was a colorblind young
man.
George Steven was about to enter the intersection.
→George Steven,
a colorblind young man, could not tell red from green when he was about to enter
the intersection.（同格、when）
I
was in senior high school.
I used to have a P.E. teacher.
The teacher
boasted of his son.
His son was a professional pitcher.
→When I was in
senior high school, I used to have a P.E. teacher who boasted of his son being
a professional pitcher.（when, who, -ing）
